บันไดปลา The Fish Ladders
M: Have you ever visited the Chainart Dam of the Chao Phraya
River?
คุณเคยไปดูเขื่อนชัยนาทของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาไหม?
N: Yes, I have.

M: You may have seen the fish ladders at that dam, I guess.
คุณคงจะได้เห็นบันไดปลาแล้วสินะผมว่า
N: No, nobody told me about that. What are the fish ladders?
เปล่า ไม่มีใครบอกผมเรื่องบันไดปลาเลย มันคืออะไรนะ?
M: The fish ladders were built to help migrating fish.
บันไดปลาสร้างขึ้นเพื่อช่วยปลาที่อพยพไงล่ะ
N: How do they help?
มันช่วยได้อย่างไร?
M: Well, before the dam was built, the fish could swim all the way
up the river.
ก็เมื่อก่อนที่เขื่อนจะสร้างขึ้น ปลาสามารถว่ายขึ้นไปตามแม่น้ำได้ตลอด
N: What did they swim up for?
มันว่ายขึ้นไปทำไมนะ?
M: For laying their eggs, of course.
ก็ไปวางไข่น่ะสิ
N: But there are many rapids up the river, I understand. It must
be difficult for the fish to swim against strong currents.
แต่ทางเหนือๆ ของแม่น้ำก็มีแก่งมากมายอยู่นี่เท่าที่ผมเข้าใจ
ปลามันคงว่ายทวนกระแสน้ำเชี่ยวขึ้นไปอย่างยากลำบากอยู่แล้ว
M: Yes, sometimes they had to leap over the falls, but every year
they could migrate up the river.
ใช่ บางทีมันต้องกระโดดดข้ามน้ำตก
แต่มันก็สามารถอพยพขึ้นไปตามแม่น้ำได้ทุกปี
N: They can't leap over a high dam, I suppose.
มันคงกระโดดข้ามเขื่อนไม่ได้นะ ผมว่า
M: No, that was why we had to build ladders for them.
ไม่ได้หรอก เพราะอย่างนั้นเราถึงต้องสร้างบันไดให้มัน
N: What do those ladders look like?
บันไดพวกนั้นมีรูปร่างเป็นอย่างไร?
M: They are a series of man-made pools. Each pool is higher
than the last. They look like stair-cases in our houses, but
each step is much wider in order to let the fish to swim there
for a while before they leap to the next pool. They leap from
pool to pool untill they reach the river behind the dam.
มันก็คือ แอ่งน้ำที่คนทำขึ้นถัดกันขึ้นไปเป็นชั้นๆ ค่อยๆ สูงขึ้นไปทีละแอ่ง
ดูก็คล้ายๆ บันไดตามบ้านเรา แต่ว่าขั้นบันได
กว้างกว่าเพื่อให้ปลาได้ว่ายอยู่ตามแอ่งนั้น
ชั่วครู่หนึ่งก่อนที่จะกระโดดขึ้นไปยังแอ่งต่อไป มันกระโดดไปทีละแอ่งๆ
จนไปถึงแม่น้ำหลังเขื่อน
